About Us
     All India Radio Siliguri was commissioned on 7th July 1963 as an Auxiliary Station of All India Radio Kolkata with a broadcasting strength of 20 Kilo Watts (2 x 10 Kilo Watts NEC transmitter) as a part of Medium Wave plan to provide medium wave coverage to the people of North Bengal. The studio was then housed in a small  room of the Hakimpara Post Office. Dilip Chatterjee was the first announcer whose voice went on AIR from this station. However there was no originating programme then. Only News Programme (from AIR Delhi & AIR Kolkata) and Troops Programme (from AIR Guwahati) used to be relayed. Recorded disc of Anurodher Asar (listeners' request) programme used to come from AIR Kolkata.
     First originating programme was Prantik which was produced in 1969.
     First O.B. Recording was conducted from this station in 1970.
     In due course, the Station was elevated to originate 90 minutes of programme (Prantik produced by Dijendra Kumar Sinha) daily since 1st June 1975. Subsequently, the Station was upgraded to the status of full-fledged Station since 8th August 1982. The Studio Complex in 2nd Mile (Sevoke Road) was commissioned at this time. The first Station Director was Amalendu Bikash Kar Chowdhury.
     The popular programmes Pratyusha, Grame Ganje, Yuva Anusthan and Mahila Majlish started from the year 1983. First live broadcast of Shishumahal (childrens' phone in) went on AIR in 1984 from the Industrial Training Institute (ITI).
     The High Power Transmitter (2 x 100 Kilo Watts BEL HMB 140 transmitters) was commissioned at Salugara campus in 1987.
    Hemanta Mukhopadhyay visited this station in 1989. Incumbent Director General Shashi Kapoor visited in 1996.
     Mananiyeshu and Arogya started in 1996.
     The 2 x 5 Kilo Watts FM Transmitter (GCEL) was commissioned in 2001 for carrying programmes of Vividh Bharati Service (VBS). In 2004 AIR VBS got appreciation from the Directorate for excellent revenue earning.
     Live phone-in programme started in 2002.
     Then Information & Broadcasting Minister Sri Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi visited this station in 2007.
     Many other distinguished personalities have visited All India Radio Siliguri from time to time. Some of them are: renowned singer and music composer Manabendra Mukhopadhyay, veteran singer Ashoketaru Bandopadhyay, singer Madhuri Chattopadhyay, Indian Classical Musician in the Hindustani Music Gharana Ustad Rashid Khan, one of the most renowned exponents of Khayal in this country Pandit Amiya Ranjan Banerjee, famous poet Subhas Mukhopadhyay and renowned film director cum screenwriter cum producer Mani Ratnam.

     Shri Ajit Panja also visited this station when he was holding the portfolio of Minister-of-state in the Information & Broadcasting Ministry.

     All India Radio has gone through evolutionary process with offering variety programmes inducting popular format live phone in. At present AIR Siliguri Primary Channel is transmitting 15 hours 7 minutes duration of programme daily through MW support of 421.9 Metre and 711 KHz. AIR VBS transmitting programme through 101.4 MHz FM with a duration of 4 hours 5 minutes programme daily. AIR Siliguri has a good number of Auditioned Music Artistes around 450 in number representing the entire North Bengal. Our station carefully promotes rare folk culture and folk music tradition through regular broadcast. With utmost effort representing the entire North Bengal AIR expanding with expectations and blessings of the listeners'. Our motto is "Bahujano Hitayo Bahujano Sukhayo" and AIR Siliguri is dedicated to that cause.
